Common Questions from Homeowners & Renters
What is Mass Save?
Mass Save is a collaborative energy efficiency program sponsored by Massachusetts’ utility companies. It provides residents with no-cost home energy assessments, rebates, and 0% financing for approved efficiency upgrades.
Who qualifies for a Mass Save home energy assessment?
Most Massachusetts residents—including homeowners, renters, and landlords—qualify for a no-cost energy assessment if their home is served by a participating utility such as National Grid, Eversource, or Unitil.
What happens during an energy assessment?
A licensed specialist inspects your home’s insulation, heating and cooling systems, and air sealing. You’ll receive a personalized report with recommended upgrades and available rebates.
What upgrades qualify for rebates?
Upgrades that reduce energy use—like insulation, air sealing, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and smart thermostats—typically qualify for rebates covering up to 100% of costs.
How much can I save through Mass Save?
Savings vary by home, but many residents save hundreds of dollars per year on energy bills. Some upgrades, like insulation, can be discounted or even fully covered.
What is the HEAT Loan program?
The HEAT Loan offers 0% interest financing for energy efficiency upgrades. Homeowners can borrow up to $25,000 with repayment terms up to seven years.
Can renters participate in Mass Save programs?
Yes. Renters can request an energy assessment for their unit, and we’ll work with their landlord to implement qualifying upgrades at little or no cost.
How long does the process take?
From assessment to completed upgrades, most projects are completed within a few weeks. Timelines vary depending on scope and contractor availability.
Does Mass Energy Savers work for the utilities?
No. Mass Energy Savers is an independent energy advisory service that helps residents navigate state-funded programs. We don’t represent the utilities—we represent you.
Are the assessments really free?
Yes. The cost is fully covered through state energy efficiency funding, meaning there’s no charge to you for the assessment itself.
